Fresh off the release of the Marshall Mathers LP 2, Eminem has unveiled the music video of “Rap God” which was one of Eminem’s successful singles. With other tracks like “Berzerk” and “The Monster” dominating the iTunes charts, MMLP2 officially went platinum last week and is the year’s second biggest release (in terms of albums sold) behind Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience.

The video itself is very well done in the fact that it does a great job of complementing the song. As Eminem shows off his technical and clever wordplay for over 6 minutes, the visuals keep up with him and his multiple references within the dense and jam-packed lyrics. There is an obvious Max Headroom influence throughout the entirety of the video, a famous 1980’s British character who was described as “the world’s first computer-generated TV host.” The scenes that recreated the rap battles in 8 Mile also provided some nostalgia and overall, the video was as fact-paced as the track itself and is definitely worth a watch.

Final Consensus: As mediocre as I thought MMLP2 was, I have always been a fan of this song. Eminem has and always will be a greatly skilled technical rapper…the man can bend words that aren’t supposed to rhyme and with the variety of flows he has it looks effortless. This is why I thought Rap God was a solid track as it was showing the world once again how talented Eminem is as a pure lyricist and emcee. The beat gets repetitive pretty quickly but for a song with only verses and no hook, I think it serves its purpose. The video was pretty impressive and will probably be the best one we get from the MMLP2 era.
