Talib Kweli is a legend in hip-hop and the premier rapper on one of my favorite albums of all-time Reflection Eternal. However, it would be fair to say that you cannot compare the Kweli of 2013 to the one who shined throughout late 1990’s-early 2000’s. While some say he has fallen off, you cannot deny the work ethic Talib has shown with this upcoming album Gravitas being his second release of 2013 as a follow-up to Prisoner of Conscious. The latter was met with fairly positive reviews, but the track-list of Gravitas looks a lot more focused and concise.

With that in mind, Talib has released a new song off the album called “New Leaders” featuring The Underachievers; a progressive underground group out of New York that are receiving a great deal of positive attention based off their 2013 mixtapes, Indigoism and The Lords of Flatbush. AK and Issa Gold contribute a verse each on the song and both sound great over the triumphant-sounding production provided by Statik Selektah.

As for Kweli, I think he sounds inspired on the track specifically with his chanting-style hook, referencing the same message put forth by Kanye West on “New Slaves” in terms of leaders/followers (minus the vulgarity). I’m not sure if the rest of Gravitas will be on the level of this song, but at least it has me interested and enthused. Take a listen to “New Leaders” below and let us know what you think.
