The career of Wale has been one full of ups and downs. The rapper from Washington D.C. gained a passionate following early in his career after releasing mixtapes such as 100 Miles & Running and The Mixtape About Nothing. Wale has been affiliated with a number of labels from Interscope to his current position with both MMG and Roc Nation, fulfilling his potential to some and disappointing others simultaneously.

Wale has struggled to deal with the negativity and get over his lack of acceptance from certain critics, leading to outbursts such as the leaked phone call with Complex magazine last week. The publication left Wale’s album The Gifted off their Top 50 Albums of 2013 list and he was none too happy about it. Complex recorded a phone conversation between him and an employee that featured Wale threatening the company and accusing them of having a personal vendetta against him.

E-Bro and Peter Rosenberg of Hot 97 caught up with Wale so he could address the situation. He admitted to not being perfect and letting his bad temper get the best of him, but nothing close to an apology came out of the conversation. In my opinion, Wale had every right to be angry with Complex because even though The Gifted will not be in my top 10 albums of 2013, it certainly deserved a spot in the top 50. Many artists love the music they make, but hate the industry they are in. Wale seems to act as a magnet to all of the BS that comes with the business side of hip-hop. Sometimes it is his own fault, other times it is a result of things out of his control. Nevertheless, it is clear Wale still has some learning to do when it comes to dealing with his haters. Hopefully he is able to channel this passionate energy into creating even better music come 2014.

This article spotted at 2DopeBoyz does a great job of outlining the situation as well as the overall trajectory of Wale’s career. Click here to read it and you can watch Hot 97’s lengthy discussion with Wale below.
