Future has swiftly become one of the more popular hook kings in hip-hop the past year or so. His recent street single “Sh!T” is one of many hits that have caught on recently, most likely attributed to the fact that high rising producer MikeWiLLMadeIt is the man behind the club favorite hood anthem. Due to the tracks’ success, “Sh!t” is getting the remix treatment from a number of high profile rappers, but this version featuring Drake and Juicy J is the one that has everybody talking as Drizzy seems to fire multiple subliminal shots at none other than Kendrick Lamar.

The media manufactured “beef” between Drake and Kendrick is too juicy of a topic to avoid. Rap is a competitive sport and when Kendrick went at the best of the best by name in his “Control” verse and continued his rampage on the BET cypher, Drake seemed to be a little offended. As Drake explained in a detailed interview with Vibe magazine, he felt that all of the hype around Kendrick’s verse overshadowed the promotion of his album Nothing Was The Same. Personally, I do not think Drake is built for a lyrical “battle” with Kendrick and in my opinion he could have handled this whole situation better from the get go. Nevertheless, what has been said is out there and this verse on the “Sh!t” seems to have some pretty direct lyrics toward K Dot.

Drake has a couple of quotables that hit hard and have some truth to them such as “Yeah, I just think it’s funny how they dangling the bait, But I’m the one that’s killing niggas on the hooks though”. But overall, the verse was lackluster and far from what Drake is capable has an emcee. Even the executives at TDE took to Twitter to air out their thoughts as they did not feel threatened by the verse whatsoever.

Going into 2014, it will be interesting to see where this rivalry goes. The night of the Grammy’s will be an important one as both artists are up for a number of awards and Kendrick will be performing at the show. We know it is going to be a big year music-wise for Kendrick and TDE, while Drake might have his eyes on achieving broader goals in the movie and sports industries. Nevertheless, this topic will not be disappearing any time soon and this verse on the “Sh!t” remix is just another jab to keep people talking.
