Ever since French Montana appeared on the XXL Freshman Class of 2012 magazine cover, he has made huge strides in popularity within the mainstream hip-hop audience. French has been releasing street mixtapes since 2002, but only recently has he gained traction to a wider fan base. He finally released his debut studio album titled Excuse My French last May after many delays, but it was met with mostly mixed/negative reviews. Singles such as “Pop That” and “Ain’t Worried About Nothin” blew up on the radio and in the club scene, but overall the album had little substance. So for the time being, French has gone back to the mixtape route and released the fourth installment of his Coke Boys project with Chinx Drugz and recently signed Lil Durk

Overall, the mixtape is a welcome return to French Montana’s previous material and the project is enhanced by the guest features and fitting production for the NY rapper. While French is by no means a top lyricist, he plays to his strength as a hook master on tracks like “Intro” and “Millionaire Thoughts”. French also picks some solid beats on the project such as frequent collaborator Harry Fraud’s “88 Coupes (ft. Jadakiss)” and Coke Boys banger “Don’t Waste My Time”. While the second half of the mixtape suffers from redundancy and mediocrity, Coke Boys 4 does have some gems on here such as “God Body” and the heavily Lana Del Rey sampled “All For You”.

While Coke Boys 4 probably will not have too much replay value, it is worthy of a spin and you may find a handful of tracks that you will be inclined to come back to. Listen to the mixtape below and let us know what you think!
