DJ Premier and Pete Rock are widely recognized as two of the greatest hip-hop producers in history as they constantly challenged each other in the 1990’s as giants in the New York rap scene. From DJ Premier’s projects with the late Guru as Gang Starr or Pete Rock’s work with CL Smooth, each legend has contributed to a number of classic rap records and albums. While Premo and Pete Rock are past their prime in the rap game, in recent years they have hinted at working together on a collaborative project and it may be coming sooner than we think.

In an interview with ThisIs50’s Young Jack Thriller, DJ Premier and Pete Rock announced that they still are planning on releasing an album together tentatively titled Pete Rock vs. Premier. However, it is hard to report this as official news as this project has been “in the works” for a number of years. The two could easily make a living by touring and DJ’ing on hip-hop radio stations across the country, but if they put 100% of their focus into this project it has the potential to have a much needed impact on New York hip-hop.

Much has been made of Southern influenced trap music dominating the radio airwaves in the Big Apple, and NY rap fans have long been searching to regain their dominance within the genre. While a DJ Premier/Pete Rock album in 2014 would not capture the attention of the mainstream audience, it could be the perfect platform to showcase the talent that exists in the five boroughs. There are plenty of deserving emcees who would fit over Premo and Pete Rock’s production style (see Beast Coast movement) and if they developed a concept for the record (such as when Madlib and J Dilla connected as Jaylib on Champion Sound), it could develop into something special.

While this is all hearsay and we do not have any concrete details about the album, we are still excited to see this project come into fruition. Watch the interview below and let us know what you think of its potential.
