Along with the rest of TDE, Ab-Soul had a relatively quiet 2013 in terms of not releasing any full projects. While the buzz is at an all time for Kendrick Lamar as he still rides the GKMC and “Control” verse wave, the other members of TDE have somewhat fallen under the radar. This should change once partner-in-crime ScHoolboy Q releases Oxymoron in February, and it looks like Ab-Soul will follow right after with material of his own. Most fans of the TDE movement consider Ab-Soul’s last project Control System to be a standout body of work, but the blogs continue to undervalue the rest of Black Hippy while putting all of their focus on Kendrick.

In an interview with BootLeg Kev, Ab Soul touched on a number of topics including the above notion. The controversy set off when magazine XXL ran the headline “Kendrick Lamar & Black Hippy” on their cover when in fact K. Dot is a member of the group, not above them. This certainly rubbed Ab-Soul off the wrong way as he took to Twitter to address the situation. While it seemed very unlikely Ab-Soul would leave the group due to XXL’s mishap, he certainly got his point across:

“That wasn’t exactly directed at XXL. That’s everybody. That was for all blogs, all social media, all media outlets. A lot of them are printing it like that and that’s not the name of the group. “

It is understandable that Ab-Soul and his peers (ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock) would be upset about not receiving the visibility they deserve. Nevertheless, this is an issue they will have to deal with as Kendrick continues his reign on the rap game.

However, more important news came from the interview as Ab-Soul revealed that his upcoming album (untitled at the moment) is being mixed by TDE engineer Ali and should be released in Q1 of this year. While Ab-Soul was hesitant to reveal potential features on the project (besides his TDE brethren), we did learn that New York producer Statik Selectah will be one of the producers involved with the record.

While this is good to hear, the most exciting rumor that was discussed was the possibility of a collaborative project that would include Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q, Danny Brown, and A$AP Rocky. This possibility has long been discussed on internet forums, but to hear from Ab-Soul himself that this could legitimately be in the works is fantastic news.

We look forward to any music that comes from Ab-Soul and TDE is lining up to have a monster 2014. Watch the insightful interview below and let us know what you think of the news!
