50 Cent Talks SMS Audio, Upcoming Music at CES 2014

50 Cent is much more than a rapper nowadays as he has taken part in multiple entrepreneurial business ventures. The rapper who rose to fame early in his career off the success of his debut album Get Rich Or Die Tryin has become a branding expert with a strong financial backing and consistent social media presence. The multi-platinum rapper has mainly devoted his time and money to SMS Audio, his headphone company that is competing with the likes of powerhouse Beats By Dre among many other alternatives. 50 Cent recently paid a visit to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in order to promote SMS Audio as well as give his fans an update on the music side of his career.

Following his business partnership with New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony a couple weeks ago, 50 Cent launched a new Sports edition line of his SMS Audio headphones that are built for athletes and fitness fanatics. 50 said to expect more new products from SMS Audio throughout the rest of the year and also addressed (in an interview with Complex) how he envisions his company succeeding in the ultra-competitive audio market, with mentor Dr Dre holding the reigns at the top:

Q. The headphone game is ridiculously crowded, and unless your name is Beats, it’s difficult to snatch a piece of the audio market. In what ways do you see SMS winning right now?

A. I’ve launched SMS in 59 countries. We pretty much turned it into Adidas. Nike is strong in America, but internationally, Adidas has soccer. Huge. It’s a lot of different things and territories. I don’t know if it has a connection with my touring at those territories. If you’ve had huge success out there in the hip-hop culture over the past decade, you have the ability to tour in areas that weren’t open markets before.

50 Cent also compared his rise in the business world to how he broke through in hip-hop in terms of ‘barrier to entry’ (see video below). The Queens rapper is known to be one of the first artists to change the hip-hop game with his early mixtape releases, and he is taking the same approach with his headphones in terms of using market tests in order to gauge the interest of the audience/consumers.

Presently on the music front, 50 Cent fans have long been awaiting the release of his next album Street King Immortal. Before that album comes out, 50 Cent announced that he will be releasing another project titled Animal Ambition that we should expect in Q1 of 2014. He went into some details about the shared themes and topics that make up Animal Ambition in the interview:

Q. So is Street King Immortal still on deck as your next music project?

A. There’s an album I am putting out before Street King Immortal. The title is called Animal Ambition. It’s an untamed desire to win. The record is overall about prosperity, ambition, and has an entrepreneurial energy—it’s all from a distorted perspective. I just been really excited about the concept, been writing and had a lot of time to create material for the release because it’s taken so long.

So when you listen the record, you’ll see it because I told you it, it’s about ambition. If I didn’t say that, you wouldn’t listen to the record and say what’s that song called? Cause when Biggie was saying, “Damn, niggas wanna stick me for my paper,” that’s writing prosperity, but the effects of it from others. Jealousy is created from you moving forward. I wrote it from a lot of different angles in order to create an album with all the facets I was comfortable with so it could all have one thing.

While 50 Cent has become more relevant as a business man rather than hip-hop artist in recent years, we are still excited to see what he has in store for 2014. Tracks like “Financial Freedom” prove that 50 still has some hunger left in him and we are glad to see that he is leaving the convoluted parts of his musical past behind him (aka. G-Unit).
