Big Sean has been relatively quiet lately coming off the release of his album Hall Of Fame last year. The project was met with mixed reviews and it was somewhat overshadowed by the Kendrick Lamar verse on “Control”, as people tend to forget that the song was a promotional single for Big Sean. However, Hall Of Fame did have its high points and showed that Big Sean is capable of fulfilling his strong potential as he continues to find his artistic identity. So after a few months of relative silence, Big Sean has released “1st Quarter Freestyle” and a video to accompany it. Although we know that this is not an actual freestyle, the song is hard-hitting and features Big Sean in a lyrical zone.

Taking advantage of the strong production provided by Key Wane and Travi$ Scott, Big Sean rips the track apart with his signature witty punchlines. This track is reminiscent of the mix-tape version of Big Sean as the two verses are jam-packed with wordplay. And as Big Sean notes on the track, “This is for the fans that say they love the album but they fucking love the mixtapes.” While we are not sure if this impressive freebie will be on an upcoming Big Sean project, “1st Quarter Freestyle” is definitely another step in the right direction for the Detroit rapper and a track all of his fans will go crazy over.
