Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and Marvin Gaye are two legendary musicians who each mastered their respective crafts of hip-hop and soul music. While many mixes and mash-ups tend to be hastily done, luckily enough this is not the case when it comes to the work of Amerigo Gazaway. Gazaway’s new “Soul Mates” series continues the theme of his previous material in creating dream collaborations. For this project, Gazaway has reconstructed the instrumentation and sample’s of Marvin Gaye’s Motown classics, combining them with the stellar raps of Yasiin Bey. The results are of epic proportions after hearing the project’s lead single “Inner City Travellin’ Man”, a truly soulful hip-hop record that flawlessly arranges the vocals of Gaye with the rhymes of Yasiin Bey.

Gazaway does a remarkable job of meshing Bey’s astounding lyrics with Gaye’s hauntingly beautiful vocals. The old school vibes of the track are undeniable and Gazaway’s musically innovative prowess is very impressive. The full Yasiin Gaye album will be out on February 25th and this first single has us eagerly anticipating the project. Honestly, “Inner City Travellin’ Man” is one of the best songs we’ve heard in quite some time considering many would label it as a “mash-up”. If only Marvin Gaye and Yasiin Bey were both alive at the same time to create timeless music together…but this project is the next best thing.

Listen to “Inner City Travellin’ Man” below and let us know what you think!
