Talib Kweli has been an influential figure in hip-hop since the mid-1990’s when he first linked with up Mos Def to create Black Star and he has been making high-quality solo albums for the past 15 years. As an universally respected “conscious” lyricist, Talib is an emcee that we can all learn from and his significant impact on the hip-hop culture should be admired. Kweli has shown no signs of slowing down in terms of his output as he released two albums (Prisoner Of Conscious and Gravitas) last year. Kweli sat down with DJ Whoo Kid at Shade 45 to talk about his latest work as well other topics such as touring with Macklemore and his opinions on artists like Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco.

Talib’s newly released album Gravitas is another example of hip-hop artists being creative in terms of marketing their music. Kweli made the album strictly available on his website KweliClub.com and a purchase of the project added you into Kweli’s personal e-mail address book. This method was a way of rewarding Talib’s diehard fan-base and it was certainly a unique way of doing so. DJ Whoo Kid talked with Kweli about the project, specifically his advantage in being able to call on legendary artists such as Raekwon and Black Thought for guest features. Along with Black Thought, Talib Kweli mentioned Pharoahe Monch and Jean Grae as his favorite emcees out there today who inspire him.

DJ Whoo Kid also talked about Kweli’s relationship with more high-profile rappers such as Kanye West, Mos Def, Jay-Z, and 50 Cent. Talib had interesting stories about each one of them such as how Jay-Z ended up on the “Get By Remix”, which was one of many anecdotes from the interview. One rapper who we didn’t mention above is multiple Grammy winner Macklemore, who invited Kweli to go on tour with him last year. This was certainly a respectable decision for Macklemore to make as the veteran Kweli was introduced to an entirely distinct audience. Needless to say, Talib shared some pearls of wisdom regarding the aforementioned artists as well as the music industry in general.
