When you look back at hardcore hip-hop groups from New York back in the 1990’s, you cannot go without mentioning Onyx. While many people know the name Onyx merely because of their hit song “Slam”, the impact of the group goes much deeper than that as they were a key part of the foundation that built raw, hardcore hip-hop in NY along with M.O.P and Mobb Deep. Onyx has been relatively quiet the past couple of years, but they are coming back in 2014 to release a new album titled Wakedafucup that will be entirely produced by The Snowgoons. Their first single goes by the same name and features Onyx along with the Dutch duo Dope D.O.D rhyming over a hard-hitting banger from the German producers who are no strangers to American underground hip-hop. Onyx recently revealed the music video for the track which put the group in a fitting setting as they ferociously rap about the need for people to “Wakedafucup”.

“Wakedafucup” is refreshing in the fact that its nice to see Onyx can still get gully as ever on the mic. Sticky Fingaz and Fredro Starr unleash their flows on the title track as their main focus remains on keeping their verses street as possible. The Snowgoons appear to be a perfect match for Onyx as their production style is suited for the New York group, and this single should be representative of what the entire project will sound. And while the guests Dope D.O.D. spit a couple lines that take things too far in terms of horrific imagery, overall “Wakedafucup” is a solid single as Onyx looks to have a resurgence this year.
