Alex Wiley is a name that we have heard buzzing around in terms of up-and-coming Chicago artists, but this is the first time we’ve had the time to give his material a listen. It is safe to say that the Chi has no shortage of rising emcees after hearing this track named “Own Man”, featuring another Chicago artist in Mick Jenkins. The track is set to appear on Wiley’s forthcoming sophomore album Village Party which should arrive sometime this spring. Using the excellent production courtesy of the beat crew Odd Couple to their advantage, Wiley and Jenkins feed off each other with quality verses that resonate nicely as Village Party’s first single.

While we are certainly impressed with Alex Wiley’s ability on the mic in terms of his cadence and flow, the production on “Own Man” is what brings the track to the next level. Everything from the pitched-down vocal samples to the string-based synths come together as this layered beat from Odd Couple allows each emcee to shine. It is easy to see why Alex Wiley has buzz around the Chicago hip-hop scene, and we can’t go without mentioning the killer verse that Mick Jenkins brings to the table at the end of track. This is not the first time these two have collaborated, so we hope to hear more tracks like “Own Man” in the future from some of Chicago’s rising stars.

Listen to “Own Man” below and let us know what you think!
