Once could describe Major Lazer as Diplo’s musical child that features a melting pot of reggae, EDM, and dance-hall themed production. The project has had great success over the years churning out a number of successful singles as well the nicely received album Free The Universe that was released last year. Wasting no time, Diplo is right back at it with another Major Lazer EP titled Apocalypse Soon and it continues its trend of disrupting the norm, yet rising to the occasion as a collection worthy of praise on the mainstream pop charts. With guest vocals from artists such as Pharrell Williams, Sean Paul, and Mr. Fox as well as wild production from Diplo, the EP brings the high level of energy we have grown accustomed to hearing from Major Lazer projects that are made for dance floor raging.

Apocalypse Soon starts off with a bang as “Aerosol Can” features current mainstream music giant Pharrell as whatever song the Neptunes producer touches turns to gold as of the past year or so. Pharrell raps effectively over the minimalist, percussion-driven beat of the project’s opener and not surprisingly, the song proves to be a standout on the EP. The next four songs on Apocalypse Soon are uncontrollably unpredictable and as soon as you get comfortable with a sound, Diplo completely switches it up as he takes the listener on a sonic roller coaster ride. A blast from the past feature that excels in his role is singer Sean Paul, who fits nicely on “Come On To Me” which offers a g-funk/reggaeton sound that is catchy and infectious. While the rest of the EP is not able to reach the high points of its first two tracks, Apocalypse Soon does offer a worthy soundtrack for dancehall environments and Diplo once again proves himself as a producer bound by no genre-restricting limits.

Album Review: 5/10
