A few years ago, the label out of California named Top Dawg Entertainment was just a blimp on the radar screen in the world of hip-hop. Fast forward to present-day and TDE is arguably the most powerful force in rap music showing no signs of slowing down. Kendrick Lamar has quickly risen as one of the most well-known and highly respected rappers in the music industry based off the success of his album good kid, m.A.A.d city. TDE has been able to ride the wave of his success to showcase the rest of the TDE members who are just as deserving of national exposure. Next in line to officially ‘blow up’ was ScHoolboy Q and based off his No. 1 status on the Billboard charts after the release of his Oxymoron album, it appears TDE has executed their strategy perfectly. While the rest of the crew that includes the lyrical mastermind Ab-Soul, veteran Jay Rock, talented up-and-comer Isaiah Rashad, and singer SZA all have projects in the works, it is Kendrick and Q who have the rap game’s full attention.

Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q appeared on the cover of the latest Billboard issue for a story titled “The Tale of Top Dawg”. While only the two more well-known artists on the TDE roster appear on the cover, the article does a great job of detailing the rise of TDE with background anecdotes from the label’s early days. The way TDE was able to align themselves with Dr. Dre and Interscope, while simultaneously having full control of their creative vision is practically unheard of in the music business these days. Through years of experimentation and building up a dedicated independent fan-base, TDE strengthened its core and once Kendrick Lamar rose to the occasion by achieving his artistic potential; the label was ready to capitalize.

Along with providing the more general info about the label, the story also delved into the recent success of ScHoolboy Q and how he has been able to reach the masses despite multiple delays of his album that would not normally be considered a chart-topping project, “Oxymoron may turn out to be 2014’s most brutal, uncompromising chart success. It teems with sonically eerie, unrepentant gangbanger tales – albeit with the lyrical depth and rich musicality that’s a TDE trademark”. Now that Oxymoron has been released, the wave of TDE music in 2014 will continue with projects by both Ab-Soul and SZA on the horizon. However, the most noteworthy tidbit of exclusive info that came from the interview is the plan for a new Kendrick Lamar album to be released in September. While this is the first mentioning of a date for K. Dot’s next project, there have been no official announcements providing concrete details. This could just be another ingenious marketing move by TDE in order build up a buzz (along with the quote about a Black Hippy album this year), so we will try to restrain our anticipation. But with the quality music that TDE has been releasing the past few years, this task is not an easy one.
