The legendary Pete Rock is highly regarded as one of hip-hop’s best all-time producers and although his classic work is behind him, we always take notice of what projects the ‘Soul Brotha No. 1’ has in the works. Therefore, we were excited to see that Pete Rock took it upon himself to honor one of the most talented jazz musicians of all time in Roy Ayers with a tribute mix. Along with being a jazz-funk pioneer, Roy Ayers is one of the most sampled artists in hip-hop history alongside people like the godfather James Brown. The 40-minute mixtape features the original tracks of Roy Ayers as the centerpiece of countless hip-hop classics that Pete Rock expertly pieces together. It makes sense that Pete Rock and Roy Ayers went on tour together recently as each artist has a similar legacy, and the admiration for each other’s work is evident. By the time you are done listening to this blast from the past mix, you may even have more respect for these two musical titans in their respective genres.
