The CunninLynguists are a group that has been respected for quite some time as one of the most talented underground crews in hip-hop. From the sharp lyrical abilities of Deacon The Villian and Natti to the consistently outstanding production from Kno, the trio have already solidified their legacy in the independent hip-hop world. The group has not released a project since their well-received album Oneirology back in 2011, but the CunninLynguists are looking to return in a big way this year as their upcoming project Strange Journey Volume Three is set to drop on April 1st. A couple of tracks from the album hit the Internet recently (“In The City”, “Dying Breed”) and both songs have us excited for what should be another stellar body of work from the CunninLynguists.

The first release from Strange Journey Volume Three was “In The City” which features Zumbi of Zion I. The song is an introspective look at the life in inner city as each emcee vividly describes their street surroundings. Every verse is jam-packed with top-notch wordplay, and the chilling production provided by Kno perfectly reflects the subject matter at hand. The daunting melodies and the powerful vocal samples standout within the production of “In The City”, which is just another testament to talent of Kno behind the boards.

However, the group took an unusual route with the second release from the album in “Dying Breed” as they reached out to a different producer named Thomax. While Kno has handled almost of the production duties for the CunninLynguists throughout the group’s existence, it makes sense as to why they ventured out as this song closely resembles something Kno would create. “Dying Breed” is a more smooth, upbeat song that Deacon The Villain and Natti lyrically glide over (per usual). Based off the strength of these two tracks, we are highly anticipating what else the CunninLynguists have in store for Strange Journey Volume Three come April.

Listen to both “In The City” and “Dying Breed” below. Let us know what you think!
