This might be the most intriguing news to come out of the blended world of music and entertainment in recent weeks. HBO’s hit fantasy drama  “Game Of Thrones” has already solidified itself as one of the network’s most successful shows of all time. In order to draw even more viewers to the show’s upcoming fourth season, HBO has gathered a high profile list of rappers for a hip-hop/reggaeton mixtape titled Catch The Throne, a 10 track compilation of original songs that are inspired by the GoT. Drawing from the themes of Game Of Thrones such as power struggles and battles, the mixtape features appearances from the likes of Big Boi, Common, Wale, and many more.

While many were quick to criticize the mixtape for merely being a marketing ploy by HBO, there are some standout songs on the compilation including “The Ladder” and “Fire”. Nevertheless, the business plan behind Catch The Throne might be the mixtape’s strongest quality as described by a member of the HBO marketing team.

Lucinda Martinez, HBO’s senior VP of cultural marketing, says the network reached out to stated fans of “Game of Thrones” to help create a musical tune-in incentive for millennials who might be casual fans or as-yet-uninitiated to the GoT cult. “We wanted to drop it a month in advance because people tend to binge-watch – especially now that winter is here,” says Martinez. “And the idea of having a bunch of artists create songs in different style with different interpretations of what ‘Game of Thrones’ is to them as artists could be an interesting way to get people engaged to watch it.”
