It is well known that rapper/singer Future has a knack for making catchy hooks and melodies, which is a big reason why the Atlanta artist has reached such a high level of prominence in the past few years. During a performance at SXSW a few weeks back, Future decided to perform an unreleased track titled “Good Morning” that sounded extremely similar to Beyonce’s smash hit “Drunk In Love”. Well it turns out that Future had a heavy hand in the creation of the track as “Good Morning” seems to be a reference track that Beyonce used for her monster single. Producer Detail is responsible for both songs, so it seem that “Good Morning” got pushed to the side for Future once the music world took notice when Beyonce dropped her ‘secret’ album late last year. While “Good Morning” may have become a successful single for Future, there is no doubt that the song reached its full potential with Beyonce and Future should be happy with those royalty checks. Future discussed the origins of “Good Morning” in multiple interview’s upon the release of the song and he gives us an insightful look into the making of the record, which will not appear on his upcoming album Honest(more…)

King Los is an artist who has been critically acclaimed for his steady collection of mixtapes he has put out over the years, but the Baltimore rapper has yet to release a cohesive studio album. Known for his exceptional skills as a freestyle emcee, King Los put his talent on display recently on the Sway In The Morning show in the ‘5 Fingers Of Death’, which forces rappers to rhyme over 5 different (and usually out-of-left-field) beats. Not once losing his focus or train of thought, King Los slaughtered the microphone as he provided the listeners with one of the better ‘5 Fingers Of Death’ freestyles we have heard in recent memory. Beyond his hard-hitting and strong lyrical raps, King Los also discussed his relationship with Diddy/Bad Boy Records as well as his latest mixtape Zero Gravity 2. There is no doubt that King Los has what it takes to be a premier artist in hip-hop, and we hope he finds the right situation that will allow him to put together a well-crafted album. (more…)

Even though he has not received a good amount of national attention, Crooked I remains as one of the fiercest emcees in the rap game with his aggressive flow and top notch lyrical ability being a strong one-two punch. The Slaughterhouse member has not lost a step and provides an exclusive gem to the latest mixtape of DJ Whoo Kid, DJ Skee, and DJ MLK. While many of the songs from the SXEW Volume 2 project had already been released, “Not For The Weak Minded” is a unheard collaboration between Crooked I and female rapper/singer Snow Tha Product. Crooked I’s performance is impressive to say the least as he raps with ultimate confidence over the minimalist production, which allows his jam-packed verses to shine. Snow Tha Product does her thing as well and the fact she isn’t blown out of the water in comparison to Crooked I is an accomplish within itself.  (more…)

The recent musical output of the legendary Alchemist never ceases to amaze us as the producer has been the mastermind behind several quality projects the last few years. He works with a variety of emcees from both the old and new schools of hip-hop and is fresh off the release of the Lord Steppington album he put out earlier this year with long time collaborator Evidence. As 2014 rolls along, Alchemist has now linked up with a lesser known producer named Budgie for a joint project that will be titled The Good Book. We were recently greeted with the first single from the effort “In Heaven’s Home”, which features two veteran New York rappers in Roc Marciano and Prodigy of Mobb Deep. With the chemistry between Alchemist and these street-certified emcees being proven over the years, it is no surprise that “In Heaven’s Home” is a strong first offering that has our stamp of approval. We have been fans of A$AP Rocky’s music since his standout Live Love A$AP mixtape that was released back in 2011. Lord Flacko has climbed up the ranks of rap’s most well-known artists since then after putting out his debut Long Live A$AP album. Because of this, we were extremely intrigued once the surprising news of an A$AP Rocky instrumental album came to light. While we were aware of Rocky’s abilities as a producer, it did not seem very likely that an instrumental project would be the means of continuing his upstart buzz amongst the general rap audience. Nevertheless, we can’t knock A$AP Rocky for fulfilling his own creative aspirations as an artist, even if it may not make the most sense from a business perspective. A$AP Rocky recently released the abstract visuals for one of his instrumental tracks “Riot Rave” (featuring Bauuer) and also unveiled another instrumental song in “Unicorn”. (more…)

This past week marked the release of Rick Ross’ highly anticipated album Mastermind and it has certainly been the hot topic of conversation in the hip-hop world. With a star-studded set of features and producers on the project, the expectations for Mastermind are lofty and it is an important album for Rick Ross at this stage of his career. The promo run for the album has been nothing short of monumental whether it be Diddy’s co-signs through Revolt TV or the numerous other interviews from the MMG boss. Leading up to the release of Mastermind, Ross has served us with a barrage of music videos from the project including the Biggie-sampled “Nobody” as well as “War Ready”, which marks Ross reuniting with Jeezy. We will hold back on our final opinion of the album until our review (stay tuned), but we will say that the tracks with the already presented visuals are a few of the standouts. If you are a big Rozay fan…this is a wonderful time of the year. (more…)

While more general hip-hop spectators may not know the name Bas, many J. Cole fans are well aware of the fellow Dreamville label emcee. Bas played a key role on the Revenge Of The Dreamers mixtape, the most recent project to come from the Dreamville crew. Aside from the J. Cole tracks on the mixtape, another record that proved to be a standout was “Golden Goals”. Bas needed no assistance on this song as he lyrically demolishes the menacing beat and with the release of the “Golden Goals” music video, we can now embrace the music as a full package. The visuals showcasing the snow-filled streets of NYC accompany the track nicely and Bas could not sound more at home on the track.  (more…)

The electronic rock duo Phantogram have been feeding their fans with material from their latest album Voices the past few months. In the week leading up to the official release of Voices, singer Sarah Barthel and producer Josh Carter have put out the visuals to their featured single “Fall In Love”. The song represents how Phantogram is able to blend a melting pot of genres and effectively create their own unique sound throughout the entire Voices project. Yes ,not only can you now watch the stunning new visuals for “Fall In Love”, but NPR is offering a stream of the whole album before its release date. If you have not yet heard of Phantogram, now would be the time to start paying attention.  (more…)

While Meek Mill continues to plot his next album that is set to drop sometime in 2014, he is still riding the success of his Dreamchasers 3 mixtape that came out last September. There were some standout cuts on that project and the Jadakiss featured “Heaven Or Hell” was definitely one of them. The track heavily samples the classic Luniz song “I Got 5 On It” and turns it into a gritty street record. The feature by veteran New York rapper Jadakiss elevates the song as he lives by his long-standing reputation of killing his guest verses. Meek Mill released the music video for “Heaven Or Hell” last week, and it serves as a reminder of how impressive Meek can be when rapping about the ills of the street life. (more…)
