It is well known that rapper/singer Future has a knack for making catchy hooks and melodies, which is a big reason why the Atlanta artist has reached such a high level of prominence in the past few years. During a performance at SXSW a few weeks back, Future decided to perform an unreleased track titled “Good Morning” that sounded extremely similar to Beyonce’s smash hit “Drunk In Love”. Well it turns out that Future had a heavy hand in the creation of the track as “Good Morning” seems to be a reference track that Beyonce used for her monster single. Producer Detail is responsible for both songs, so it seem that “Good Morning” got pushed to the side for Future once the music world took notice when Beyonce dropped her ‘secret’ album late last year. While “Good Morning” may have become a successful single for Future, there is no doubt that the song reached its full potential with Beyonce and Future should be happy with those royalty checks. Future discussed the origins of “Good Morning” in multiple interview’s upon the release of the song and he gives us an insightful look into the making of the record, which will not appear on his upcoming album Honest. Blu Releases “The West” From Upcoming Album ‘Good To Be Home’
Posted: March 23, 2014 by ericbernsen in Music, News, Songs/VideosTags: Blu, Bombay, hip hop, Music, The West
Blu is one of our favorite rappers from the West Coast and although some of his projects may not be recorded in the best sound quality, the quality of the music is undeniable. We received some great news from the California rapper recently as Blu announced that he has a new album titled Good To Be Home in the works. The lead single from the project is fittingly titled “The West” and it is a great first offering from Blu as he lyrically rips apart the hard hitting production. Apparently the entire Good To Be Home album will be produced by a beatmaker named Bombay and if he has more heat similar to “The West” in store for us, this project will be a special one.
When talking about the album, Blu was quoted as saying it will be his “most defining record ever”. That is a big statement when we consider Blu already has an underground classic under his belt in with the Exile produced Below The Heavens, and we all know that artists almost always label their latest work as their best. But “The West” is a great sign of things to come as we await Good To Be Home, which is reported to be Blu’s ode to his hometown city of Los Angeles. The album is set to be released on May 20th and we will be on the lookout for more news regarding the project. (more…)

Meek Mill is officially in album mode this year as he recently announced that the title of the project will be Dreams Worth More Than Money. As he begins to roll out promo for the project, Meek’s first move was to put out a freestyle alongside his revelation of the album title. The freestyle features Meek rapping viciously over A$AP Rocky’s “Ghetto Symphony” beat and his verses go hard as expected. While Meek did not outdo fellow MMG partner Gunplay when it comes to rapping over this instrumental (Gunplay featured on the original), we are definitely excited to see what the Philly emcee has stored for us in the coming months. And with a new single featuring Ty Dolla $ign and DJ Mustard already being previewed, it looks like Meek knows what he is doing. (more…)

This might be the most intriguing news to come out of the blended world of music and entertainment in recent weeks. HBO’s hit fantasy drama “Game Of Thrones” has already solidified itself as one of the network’s most successful shows of all time. In order to draw even more viewers to the show’s upcoming fourth season, HBO has gathered a high profile list of rappers for a hip-hop/reggaeton mixtape titled Catch The Throne, a 10 track compilation of original songs that are inspired by the GoT. Drawing from the themes of Game Of Thrones such as power struggles and battles, the mixtape features appearances from the likes of Big Boi, Common, Wale, and many more. (more…)

Posted: March 16, 2014 by ericbernsen in Music, News, Songs/VideosTags: Babylon, DJ Dahi, Music, SZA, TDE, Z
Now that ScHoolboy Q has officially released Oxymoron, TDE is looking to continue their success and garner some attention for one of their newer, more unknown members in SZA. The singer has been relatively quiet after revealing news she had two projects in the works, but we have now learned that one of these will be an EP titled Z. With an upcoming release date of April 8th, SZA decided to unveil a track from the project named “Babylon” as well as the music video for the song. With some quality TDE in-house production from DJ Dahi, “Babylon” is a somewhat chilling record that features deeply reflective lyrics from SZA which can be interpreted in multiple ways. The music video for the track is a perfect fit for a song that has overarching religious themes such as baptism and crucifixion. Time and time again, TDE is proving themselves as a well-rounded label with a highly promising future and this is due to their eye for talents like SZA. We can’t wait for her Z EP and do not be surprised if you start to see her name pop up more often. (more…)

The career trajectory of Mississippi rapper Big K.R.I.T. has been one of the more interesting stories in hip-hop over the past several years. Big K.R.I.T. built up a massive amount of hype for himself after putting out numerous mixtapes, with each one being filled with high quality beats and rhymes from the multi-talented artist. Big K.R.I.T. is a thoroughbred product of Southern hip-hop music and has already earned the respect of multiple legends in the rap game such as 9th Wonder and Bun B. However, there were some who felt let down by Big K.R.I.T.’s debut studio album Live From The Underground, which was released in 2012. Critics felt that the project was a let down in comparison to Big K.R.I.T.’s mixtapes, and that puts him in an interesting situation this year. Big K.R.I.T. is prepping the release of his upcoming album Cadillactica, and he recently promoted the project by hosting a #WeekOfKrit in the first week of March. Each day of the week, Big K.R.I.T. put out a new track and all of these songs led up to the final day that marked the unveiling of a Cadillactica preview video. Needless to say, fans of Big K.R.I.T. have been overjoyed with this influx of material and the music distribution concept was a smart marketing move as K.R.I.T. looks to silence his doubters. (more…)

Posted: March 16, 2014 by ericbernsen in Music, News, Songs/VideosTags: Casino, Future, hip hop, Honest, Move That Dope, Music, Pharell, Pusha T
The rapper/singer that goes by the name of Future increased our anticipation of his upcoming album Honest tenfold when he released “Move That Dope”, a hard-hitting posse cut track produced by none other than Mike WiLL Made It. With Future being joined by talented artists such as Pharrell, Pusha T, and Casino, the track became a instant standout and we now have an appropriate music video to accompany the song. The visuals are as retro as the production, featuring everything from Pharrell’s infamous giant hat to Future gripping a massive old school cell phone. There is just a certain bounce to “Move That Dope” that is infectious, and we can’t wait to see how it fits in the overall scope of Honest. (more…)

With practically the whole music world invading Austin, Texas for the widely heralded SXSW festival this week, there will be countless events for members to attend. While the list of concerts and conferences may be overwhelming, one show that we highly recommend attending would be the film screening of “Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton”, a documentary that chronicles the history of the infamous indie hip-hop label Stones Throw Records. We got the opportunity to attend a special screening of the film in Cambridge, MA last week, and label founder Peanut Butter Wolf was in attendance for a Q&A after the show. The film weaves together rare footage from concerts, never before seen interviews as well as old in-studio clips, making it a must-watch for hip-hop fans who have an appreciation for the music that has come from the label over the last 15+ years.
